IMPACT OF TRAINING ON ACADEMIC STAFF PRODUCTIVITY IN PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES IN RIVERS STATE
Abstract
The study is on impact of training on academic staff productivity in public universities in Rivers State. Relevant literatures were reviewed for expert opinions. Three research questions guided the study and three hypotheses were statistically tested at 0.05 level of significance. The instrument for data collection was a questionnaire structured on 4 Point Likert scaling Pattern, the instrument was validated by two experts in Educational Management. The population of the study was 1500 persons consisting of lecturers drawn from some departments in both Federal and State Universities in Rivers State. The sample of the study is 150 persons making 10% of the total population. The z-test statistic was used in testing the three null hypotheses. The result showed that there is no significant difference between the Federal and State Universities in their mean rating of the impact of staff development programme on productivity; there is no significant difference between the Federal and State Universities in their mean rating of utilization of development programme in the universities, there is no significant difference between the Federal and State Universities in their mean rating on the constraints to staff development programmes in public universities in Rivers State. It was concluded that staff development programmes are veritable tools that can enhance the productivity of staff. It was recommended among others that academic staff should undergo compulsory training on computer, the government should as a matter of necessity fund development programmes
